The First Hundred

The First Hundred
(and one) were the first
Terran colonists who arrived at Mars in 2027. They were supposed
to be the best that Humanity could offer a new world, but each had
his own internal daemons, desires and ambitions that gave each of
them a wholly different perspective on Mars.

The first of the First Hundred to suggest, openly, that the
colonists were free from the influences of Earth, he became the embodiment
of enlightened anarchy on Mars before his untimely assasination in 2061
by UNOMA forces on Phobos.
¶ His closest friend and sometimes lover was Nadia
- Boone, John ("the First
Man on Mars")
- b. 1982 d. John
Boone is one of the three principal characters in [RM] the Trilogy,
albeit one of the shortest lived (his death occurs in the first chapter
of RM). The Romantic, in more ways than one, described as having
"California blonde good looks", he is the protagonist to Frank Chalmers antagonist. He is
also Maya Toitovna's lover, and for
that he is despised by Frank.
¶ John's presence on Mars is somewhat of a staggeringly clever political
move. Being the first human to step on Mars, he was pulled from the
running for the Ares mission, since he had been exposed to a
substantial amount of cosmic radiation in his life. But clever political
manuvering on his part got him a vacant seat when one of the finalists
in Anatartica cracked up. This, too, thwarted Frank Chalmer's plans.
¶ John is ever the sensualist, and thouroughly enjoys good drugs (omegendorph)
and good sex (most of the nubile women of the first Mars colonies).
His on-again/off-again relation with Maya was probably his strongest,
but he never really settled down with one partner.

2102. Conservative pro-Industrial member of the aerology team,
later the director of the Mars elevator. Allegedly fundamentalist Christian,
seemlingly for personal political gain. Secretly in league with UNOMA
forces during the 2061 revolution -- she was one of the Clarke asteroid
survivors. She was killed by Maya Toitovna during a raid to
retrieve Sax Russell after she had helped
in his capture and interrogation at Echus Overlook.

Like many of the First Hundred, she became a symbol for later
political movements, notably the Reds.

One of Hiroko's many lovers, meticulously
cached to Mars in the first colony ship, and hidden in the farming area
until they made their break with the main colony in Underhill.
¶ One of the most enigmatic characters, barely seen or heard of in RM,
he becomes a major player once revolution breaks out on Mars. Possibly
the most well travelled Terran on Mars, he developed caches all over
the planet, organized one of the most sucessful underground groups,
and was a player in most of the Martian factions in 2061 and in the
second revolution.
¶ Described as a man of Carribean descent, with dreadlocks and a sharp
face, he has a racous laugh and a very Socialist/3rd World perspective.

Leader of the Russian contingent [RM, p. 30], strong willed,
beautiful, politically savvy (until she met Frank Chalmers), and yet
very flightly, distant and moody. She established herself in the Russian
space program with a politically motivated marriage and substantial
time on Novy Mir, including some very good work during a crisis.
By the time of the Ares launch, she was her own woman, and in
charge of the mission.
¶ Maya was the fulcrum of the triangle that included John Boone and Frank Chalmers. During the trip
to Mars, she had a brief sexual encounter with Frank, which he took
as a signal of her willingness to be his partner. But Maya merely played
with Frank, using her sex as a weapon for power. She became involved
with John, and truly fell in love with him, only to lose him early in
the colonial phase.
¶ Eventually, she was with Frank (until 2061), never suspecting the
role he played in John's death. After Frank's death, she found herself
with Michael Duval, until the "quick
decline" took him in 2206.
